This guide shows how to initialize a project with custom architectural profiles.

Initializing with Selected Profiles

To scaffold a project with specific profiles:


spec-ops init --name "PaymentService" --profile core,bdd

This generates specops.toml and sequentially renumbers installed baseline ADRs without ID collisions.

Packaging and Distributing Custom Profiles

You can author organization-specific profiles with custom ADRs, invariant overrides, and rule fragments, and package them for multi-repo distribution:


# Package a local profile directory into a portable bundle (.sop or .tar.gz)
spec-ops profiles package profiles/fintech-service --out dist/fintech-service.sop

# Initialize a new repository directly with the exported profile bundle
spec-ops init --name "FintechApp" --profile dist/fintech-service.sop

# Or install the bundle into an existing project
spec-ops profiles install dist/fintech-service.sop

Hierarchical Profile Inheritance and Composition

Custom profiles declare parent profiles using extends = ["core", "security", "ddd"] and override specific architectural invariants:
